Kinoma Player 4 EX supports streaming playback of Windows Media 9, 3GPP and 3GPP-2 (MPEG-4) audio and video, MP3, and JPEG photo streams. Streaming playback of both live and stored content is supported. Because available network bandwidth is often limited and your device’s performance is less than a PC, not all streams available on the Internet will play well on your device. To make your own streaming content targeting specific networks, we recommend converting your content using the streaming encoding presets available in Kinoma Producer 4.

Kinoma Player 4 EX supports Windows Media Video version 9 and all versions of Windows Media Audio with the exception of files encoded with Windows Media Audio Voice. Files and streams encoded with older versions of Windows Media such as Windows Media Video 7 and Windows Media Video 8 will only play audio.

Kinoma Media Guide provides access to a wide variety of free streaming media content you can play with Kinoma Player 4 EX. The guide is organized into categories which include up-to-date news, live international tv, live radio, sports, podcasts, photocasts, and more. The Kinoma Media Guide is updated regularly. To browse the guide, go to the bookmarks view in Kinoma Player 4 EX and select the Kinoma Media Guide bookmark.

There are two ways to bookmarks streams in Kinoma Player 4 EX. From the Open URL dialog, after you have entered the URL select the Bookmark button. While playing a stream, select Add Bookmark from the menu to create a Bookmark for the current stream. Also, you can bookmark a podcast feed or playlist by selecting Add Bookmark from the menu while viewing it.

You can browse many free TV and radio stations from around the world using the Kinoma Media Guide feature of Kinoma Player 4 EX.

With Kinoma Player 4 EX, you can display individual JPEG photo images as a slide show. To enable slide show, select ‘Enable photo slideshow’ in ‘Kinoma Player Preferences’. You can also select the duration each photo is displayed using the ‘Next photo after’ menu.

Any collection of photos can be viewed as a slide show, including streaming photocasts and the list of photos in the Kinoma Player 4 EX photo tab. The slide show supports both sequential and shuffle play

Kinoma Player 4 EX supports playlists in several formats, including M3U, PLS, ASX and OPML. Create play lists using desktop applications like Windows Media Player and Winamp. Then, copy your playlist, along with the media it uses, to an SD card. Select the ‘playlists’ tab in Kinoma Player 4 EX to play your play list.

Note that playlist media paths which reference local content must be relative to the playlist. Double-check that the playlist doesn’t refer to media paths like "C:\", since Palm handhelds don’t have a C: drive!

Advanced tip: you can also create playlists in any text editor to reference local or streaming content.

TiVo provides TiVoToGo free of change to TiVo owners. TiVoToGo converts video stored on your TiVo Personal Video Recorder to a format compatible with Kinoma Player 4 EX. You can download TiVoToGo here.

Yes, on Palm-branded handhelds including the Treo 700p, Treo 650, Tungsten T5 and Life Drive, Kinoma Player 4 EX can download many Internet media streams to your device’s internal memory. To enable this feature, use the Preferences form to select ‘Prefer download to streaming’ and set ‘Download to:’ to ‘Internal Storage’. If the content you are playing can be downloaded, a Save File icon will appear at the top right corner of the screen. Check the save file icon to save a copy of the media for later playback.

After the file has been saved, you can play the file from Kinoma Player 4 EX. You can also use Kinoma Player 4 EX to delete the file. You can access some standard file types including JPEG, 3GP, and MP3 from other Palm compatible applications such as the built-in Pics & Videos application on Treo smartphones.

Any standard HTTP server will work for progressive download of MP3, MPEG-4, and Windows Media files. Using a media server provides additional features, including live streaming, improved seeking, dynamic streaming thinning, and more efficient use of bandwidth. Kinoma Player 4 EX is compatible with many dedicated media servers including Windows Media Server, Darwin Streaming Server, Helix Server, and Shoutcast/Icecast servers.

Unlike desktop web browsers, Palm web browsers do not support embedding media players in a web page. However, some Palm web browsers will launch Kinoma Player 4 EX as a helper application to play streaming media. When using the Cingular network, why does my Treo sometimes get stuck at 0% buffering?

The Cingular network in the U.S. blocks UDP media traffic to Treo phones. To play RTSP media streams, Kinoma Player 4 EX requires the media data to be delivered using UDP. As a result, Kinoma Player 4 EX is unable to play back RTSP streams over the Cingular network. The restrictions of the Cingular network do not impact playback of other streaming formats with Kinoma Player 4 EX, including Windows Media, MP4, MP3 and Flash Video, formats

The built-in web browser on all Palm Powered handhelds and Treo smartphones can be used to initiate some kinds of media streaming. For example, all web browsers correctly transfer rtsp:// links to Kinoma Player 4 EX. However, beyond this, the level of support provided by these web browser varies widely. Not all web browsers are able to initiate streaming of all media links. The details of support on common devices is described below.

On the Treo 700p smartphones, Blazer 4.5 browser transfers nearly all supported streaming media links and play lists to Kinoma Player 4 EX. In some cases, the browser first displays the ‘Download’ dialog, asking whether to ‘Play’ the stream or download the content to the device. Pressing the ‘Play’ button will launch Kinoma Player 4 EX to receive and play the streaming media content. Blazer 4.5 is the only web browser that supports transfer of streaming media links to Kinoma Player 4 EX.

On the Palm T|X, the Blazer 4.3 browser transfers M3U and PLS play list links to Kinoma Player 4 EX, only if Pocket Tunes Deluxe is not installed on the device. Otherwise these play lists are transferred to Pocket Tunes. The play list link must include the play list extension in the link, e.g. http://www.server.com/media/myaudio.pls. Blazer 4.3 then displays the ‘Download’ dialog – select ‘Save to: Device’, and tap the ‘Yes’ button. Then tap the ‘Save and open’ button in the subsequent dialog to have Blazer 4.3 transfer the play list to Kinoma Player 4 EX. Note even though Kinoma Player 4 EX supports ASX play lists, all versions of Blazer prior to 4.5 transfer ASX to the built-in Palm ‘Media’ or ‘Pics & Video’ applications.

On the Palm LifeDrive (Blazer 4.1) and Treo 650 (Blazer 4.0 ) the behavior is the same at a Palm T|X running Blazer 4.3, except that the ‘Download’ dialog displays ‘Save to: Kinoma’ instead of ‘Save to: Device’. In this case, select ‘Kinoma’ to transfer the play list to Kinoma Player 4 EX.

On Treo 600 smartphones, the palmOne Web 3.0 browser transfers any supported play list to Kinoma Player 4 EX. In the ‘Download’ dialog, tap ‘Yes’ to download and then ‘Open’ to transfer the play list to Kinoma Player 4 EX. Transfer of individual streaming media content links is not supported by this browser.

On the Palm Tungsten C, the Palm Web Browser 2.0.1 provides only limited support. M3U and PLS play lists are automatically transferred to Kinoma Player 4 EX without any intervening UI. But links to .mp3 files are downloaded by the browser without any option to stream. Links to .wmv, .mp4, .3gp, etc… are not recognized.

Kinoma Producer 4 is available for computers running either Windows or Mac OS X. Windows Vista and Windows XP are supported, as well as Mac OS X 10.3.9 or better.

Owners of Kinoma Producer 3 can upgrade to Kinoma Producer 4 from the upgrade page. You will be asked to provide the email address used to purchase Kinoma Producer and the operating system (Windows or Mac OS) your purchased it for.

Kinoma Producer 4 for Windows can create Windows Media files. For each Palm handheld model, there are four Windows Media encoding presets – Normal Quality, High Quality, Music, and Speech. Select your Palm device, encoding preset, and in the "Audio & Video" tab select "Windows Media – .wmv" from the file format menu.

Windows Media files encoded using Kinoma Producer 4 on Windows may be played back on Windows Media devices and desktop computers with Windows Media 9 or better installed. They may also be played on Treo 700p phones using Kinoma Player 4 EX.

Kinoma Producer 4 encodes streaming video in the MPEG-4 file format; on Windows, the Windows Media file format is also supported. For best results, Kinoma Producer 4 provides encoding presets designed for optimal streaming over low, medium, and high bit rate networks. After encoding, copy the encoded file to a standard HTTP web server (or, for best results with Windows Media, a dedicated Windows Media Server). Once copied, the file may be streamed to Kinoma Player 4 EX or other compatible applications like Windows Media Player and QuickTime Player.

On Windows, Kinoma Producer 4 requires Palm Desktop 4.1.4 or better; on Mac OS X, Palm Desktop version 4.2.1 or better is required. Palm Desktop is not required to run Kinoma Producer 4 on either Windows or Mac OS X, but it is required to output to HotSync.

Kinoma Producer 4 encodes video with AVC compression for video capable models of the Apple iPod and the Sony Playstation Portable with firmware 2.80 or better.

The encoding presets in Kinoma Producer 4 for the Sony Playstation Portable (PSP) use H.264 video compression, to achieve the highest quality and smallest file size possible. To play back the H.264 video encoded files create with Kinoma Producer 4, version 2.80 or better of the PSP firmware is required. The latest PSP firmware is available as free download from Sony.

Kinoma Producer 4 also supports encoding to MPEG-4 Memory Stick Video, which is compatible with older firmware. To encode MPEG-4 video for PSP, select the Sony PSP device preset, click on the "Audio & Video" tab, and select "MPEG-4" from the video format menu.

The Kinoma movie format is not supported by Kinoma Producer 4 or Kinoma Player 4 EX. The Kinoma movie format was designed for use on older Palm handhelds. Kinoma Producer 4 and Kinoma Player 4 EX now use industry standard file formats, including MPEG-4 and Windows Media.
